Web design tools have evolved since the mid 90s. Websites in the past went from only text, to now being visual and video rich. Technology has advanced a lot since then. As other languages such as JavaScript, CSS and more visual imagery were used on websites, there was a demand for tools that would allow web design to not be complicated.
Nowadays, there are a vast array of different tools to use, from Content Management systems, to web applications that allow to create graphics without expensive software. Below are 7 of the ones that have made an impact in web design.
Tool #1: Prototyping Tools
Making prototypes is a fundamental piece of web design; it's the storyboard of the website. Having a mockup helps to envision the design of a website before starting the development process. Some tools such as Adobe XD, and others have been amazing tools to create mockups and treatments of websites; so everyone is on the same page in the development process.
Tool #2: Cloud Based Web Development
One of the most popular tools in web design are the cloud based web development and design tools where any user can design their website. Tools such as Wix, Squarespace and others allow any users with zero background in web design to drag and drop elements to design their website.
Tool #3: CSS Frameworks
It can be complex and quite time consuming to design a CSS stylesheet from scratch. Luckily, CSS frameworks allow web developers to get started with some styles that are consistent and widely used in web development. One of the most popular CSS frameworks is Bootstrap.
Tool #4: Javascript Frameworks
Just as CSS frameworks, JavaScript frameworks provide generic functionality that the developer can use, or change. Several frameworks that are popular are Vue.js, React and Angular.
Tool #5: Web Testing Tools
There are several web testing tools available, ranging from free to thousands of dollars. Some tools test for performance, speed, others for HTML and CSS validation. All these can help pinpoint issues with the website that can be fixed, in order to improve speed and functionality.
Tool #6: Cloud Based Web Design
Although tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Paintshop are the best in the market, not everyone has the skills, expertise and the budget to create beautiful graphics. That's why cloud based web design has been a lifesaver for those who need to create images or graphics, even logos. Tools such as Canva and PicMonkey allows users to edit images, create graphics and more.
Tool #7: Content Management Systems
A content management system allows people to create pages without having development skills; and without having to write the code from scratch. The CMS manages the site architecture so the user can focus more on the front-end of the website. One of the most popular CMS is Wordpress; and it is widely used by several types of companies, agencies and even the federal government.
Although all these tools make web design less of a complex task, these may not allow all the customization needed for everyone; luckily at Redmon we have vast experience with them; especially content management systems and graphic design.
